The National Registry of Civil Status delivered a balance sheet on the behavior of birth rates in Colombia. According to official figures, there has been a reduction of 43.6% in the last 10 years.

According to statistics, during 2014 there were 742,610 births in the country, while in 2024 this figure decreased to 419,002. This situation is in line with what the National Administrative Department of Statistics (Dane) has been reporting, which according to the most recent report between January and October 2024 there was a drop in 14.4% compared to the same period in 2023.
“The Registry Office reminds citizens that the civil birth registry allows the legal existence of people to be recognized, so that they can access their rights, as well as the goods and services of the State.“said the entity.
On the other hand, it declares that the registration of the birth must be done within the month following the occurrence of the event. If this period expires, it will be understood that the registration is untimely.
Among the requirements needed to register a newborn are: submitting an examination of the blood group and Rh factor of the person whose birth is going to be registered. The birth must also be proven through the antecedent document.
It is worth mentioning that the declarant must be duly identified and meet the requirements of the link with the person to whom register in accordance with the law.
Births by department?
According to the information provided by Dane in 2014, the four departments with the highest birth rate were related. Among these are: Antioquia with 78,186, Valle del Cauca with 56,219, Atlántico with 42,795 and Bolívar with 37,023.
However, these same ones presented a large reduction when compared to the situation in 2024. Thus, Antioquia reported 49,018, Valle del Cauca 32,207, Atlántico 25,371 and Bolívar 20,708.
How can you register a newborn?
In the report, the Registry Office provided information on the documentation required for the registration of a newborn in Colombia.
In total there are eight documents that must be presented. Among these are: the certificate of live birth, authentic documents, as a citizenship cardsentences. Indigenous authorization (only for members of said communities).

Also, the ecclesiastical certificate and/or baptism certificate must be presented, with a certificate of competence from the minister who celebrated the event, the ICBF resolution (in the case of minors in the administrative process of reestablishing rights), the resolution by the Directorate National Civil Registry (in the case of foundlings or children of unknown parents), the document or Foreign Civil Registry duly apostilled or legalized and translated (only in case the birth had occurred abroad or the forms issued by midwives and licensed midwives.
“In the absence of the above, registration may be carried out with the sworn statement of two witnesses to the fact of birth (they must be people who have witnessed the fact or have direct and reliable news of it), the parents cannot be witnesses.s”, the entity pointed out.
