About 12 arrested after confrontation between police and neighbors in Havana

SLP, Mexico.- At least 12 people were detained after the confrontation between police and residents of Finca Traviesa, a hamlet near the Technological University of Havana (CUJAE), in Marianao, according to the testimony offered by witnesses to Martí News.

Among those arrested were an elderly woman and a sick man with no connection to the violent events. The media stated that the arrests occurred during a police operation against the alleged illegal sale of fuel.

Plainclothes agents burst into the hamlet to capture the alleged fuel sellers but neighbors intervened to protest against the excessive use of force by the officers.

The operation became a confrontation which quickly escalated and ended in the arrests of Maiquel Pacheco, Greisy Yanki, Dunieski Jardi, Dailín Pérez, Yulier Gómez Canga, Yurisbel Larduet Despaigne, Daniel (known as Pasi), Dainier Brook, and a man identified as Yoel, who apparently did not He lives in the village.

“The police came, dressed in civilian clothes. They fell behind sellers, supposedly of gasoline. They fired shots in the neighborhood. Although the bullets did not hurt anyone, one was thrown into the air and another hit a boy named Dainier Brook, who fell to the ground. They entered aggressively, using tonfas. They beat men who were only defending the reason why they fired shots next to where there are small children. Even if they are blank bullets, it is not correct,” he told Martí News an eyewitness to the events.

Bárbara Duanes, 67, and Landriel Kindelán Matos, 43, unrelated to the events, were arrested. The man suffers from hypertension, obesity and has a heart disease, according to his relatives.

“He didn’t even see what happened, and he suffers from chronic venous insufficiency. For her part, the older lady, Barbara, had blood in her mouth, she was beaten,” a witness told the news outlet.

Although 11 neighbors were initially detained, a woman named Dayana Mora was arrested in a police unit when she was investigating the situation of one of those arrested. She was later released.

The inhabitants of the hamlet are experiencing “a terror,” according to the description of the source who offered his story.

The detainees are mostly held in the center known as El Vivac, in Calabazar, and face accusations related to the illegal sale of gasoline. Some were sent to the Fifth Unit, in the Playa municipality, for crimes of attack against the authorities.

In a video that quickly went viral on social networks this Sunday, the repressors, dressed in civilian clothes, are seen handcuffing several men, while a neighbor shouts to ask residents in the neighborhood to go to the police.

Internet user Pablo Mendoza reported in Facebook that the agents of the Cuban regime used firearms during the confrontation with the civilian population.

In his publication he inserted photos showing bullet casings, supposedly in the area of ​​the confrontation, along with videos that demonstrate the violence of the encounter.

“They don’t believe in children, women or the elderly. Look at this at CUJAE, how they treat people like animals. It is not enough for them to have the need that they put the people through; they also have to mistreat them. “My people need freedom,” he wrote in his post.
