Abinader will submit to Congress Comprehensive Law for the Prevention of Violence against Women

Santo Domingo. – President Luis Abinader announced this Thursday the introduction to the National Congress of the Comprehensive Law on Prevention and Attention to Violence against Women, as well as the modification to the Law on Human Trafficking and Trafficking.

The president also ordered the creation of a Guarantee Fund of 100 million pesos to support the economic empowerment of women.

Both laws constitute a national necessity to ensure women a life free of violence, a safe country full of opportunities and that effectively prosecute criminals, said the president.

President Luis Abinader said that the creation of the fund aimed at promoting the empowerment of women in the country is an initiative so that they can get the opportunity to start their business projects through this type of credit and reach spaces of opportunity for them and your families.

The president’s announcement was made at the celebration of the “Advances and Challenges for an Inclusive Recovery Meeting” within the framework of the 23rd anniversary of the Ministry of Women, held in the Amber Room of the Dominican Fiesta Hotel.

President Abinader also indicated that the Executive is working on the preparation of a Decree aimed at reinforcing the National Plan for Gender Equality and Equity (PLANEG), as it is a public policy on gender equality that requires certain guarantees. before all state institutions.

In this regard, he said that they seek to apply a plan that complies with the constitutional mandates and the main international commitments to ensure real equality, and respond to the needs faced by women in the social, economic and political spheres.

“To achieve the implementation of PLANEG, it is necessary to strengthen institutional gender mechanisms, therefore, we will work on strengthening the Gender Equality Units (UIG) and establishing guidelines so that each ministry and public institution fully comply with its obligations in terms of sectoral policies for the benefit of women”, assured the Head of State.

Elimination of Violence and Harassment

Abinader also announced that he will ask the National Congress to ratify the ILO Convention C-190 on the elimination of violence and harassment in the labor sector.

The president said that such ratification would be in line with progress in fulfilling international commitments and closing gaps in the labor sphere, as established by his government program.

The official reiterated his commitment to continue contributing to the strengthening of the Ministry of Women, to respond to the challenges that the women present raised at the meeting.

“I will continue working for a country where you, dear Dominican women from all over the national territory and from Dominican communities abroad, can contribute all your abilities, dreams and illusions, for the well-being of the country,” he said.

On her side, the Minister for Women, Mayra Jiménez, thanked President Luis Abinader for his support for the Ministry he heads and for his commitment to the well-being of Dominican women.

“We reaffirm the role of the Ministry of Women in fulfilling its responsibilities, to ensure gender mainstreaming in all sectoral public policies, through efficient support to other State institutions, and coordination with the private sector and society. civil. In addition to ensuring efficient, articulated and transparent management”, she emphasized.

She added that, for the first time in the country’s history, there is a government that responds to the demands of women to establish a national care policy that rewards and economically values ​​care work to advance as a State towards human and sustainable development.

Subsequently, women leaders from the peasant sector, youth, diaspora, community, business and academic sectors spoke.

The purpose of the commemorative activity was to publicize the progress of the Ministry of Women in the application of policies, plans, programs and projects for gender equality and the full exercise of their rights.

President Luis Abinader was also accompanied by the Comptroller General of the Republic, Catalino Correa; the Vice Ministers for Vulnerable Sectors and Child Labour, Mayrenis Corniel García, and for Innovation, Transparency and Citizen Attention, Dilia Leticia Jorge Mera; the deputy minister of communications abroad, Carlos de la Mota and the director of Promipyme Porfirio Peralta.

Also present were the resident coordinator of the United Nations (UN) Mauricio Ramírez Villegas; diplomatic representatives and Monsignor Santiago Rodríguez, also representing rural women, Katherine Cabrera; of the young women, Edith Ciprián; from civil society and community women, Mildred Mata; of the women of the diaspora, Yaneli Sosa, as well as the governors of the different provinces.
