Santiago.- The president Luis Abinader supervised this Saturday the work on the retaining wall that is being built on Las Carreras avenue, in the section between España street and Antonio Guzmán avenue, in this city, of whose progress he received explanations from the Minister of Public Works, designe ascension.
These works are carried out to correct the landslide caused by the rains that fell on August 16 of this year.
The president was also accompanied by the regional director Alexis Sosa, as well as the geologist Osiris de León and the representative of the construction company in charge of the work, who explained all the details of the construction.
Ascención announced that the work will be ready by May 2023 and that the investment will be around RD$700 million pesos.
“Supervising the progress of works like this, which has a fundamental significance for Santiago, since it represents security for dozens of families and merchants who live throughout this area,” he said.

The minister asked for the understanding of all the community members who live close to the work, as well as all those who travel through this important road in the city of Santiago.
For his part, the geologist Osiris de León, who is in charge of the work’s feasibility studies, explained that the MOPC’s job is to build a new gabion wall, with filters, so that when it rains or a sewage pipe leaves escaping water goes straight down a drain on the west side.
He explained that by order of the Minister of Public Works, a detailed characterization of the subsoil was made, to identify two things: first, that could be explained, why the wall had failed that afternoon of August 16, and second, how to correct the problem that can last without failing again.
“Until now there was no drainage, therefore, all the rainwater accumulated and increased the pressure of the wall and that is why it collapsed,” he added.
He expressed that the work being carried out is so that the work lasts for more than 100 years without failing again, whether there is a hurricane or an earthquake.
“Those works are now being corrected by the MOPC and will work for decades without any setbacks for the road or for the community,” he said.
