Abinader sets position after Maduro's capture and reiterates support for Venezuelan democracy

SANTO DOMINGO.- The president Luis Abinader stated this Saturday that the Dominican Government closely follow the evolution of events in Venezuelaafter the capture of Nicolás Maduro by United States forces after a military action carried out at dawnand of his indictment in New York on narcoterrorism charges.

In an official statement, Abinader recalled that Dominican Republic never recognized the legitimacy of Maduro’s proclamation as president after the July 2024 elections. “In line with this, we promoted the Declaration of Saint Dominic August of the same year, which demanded respect for the will expressed at the polls,” he stressed.

The Dominican president emphasized that The solidarity between the Dominican and Venezuelan peoples is historic and reiterated the willingness of your Government to collaborate with the reestablishment of democracy, peace and national harmony in Venezuela. “The Dominican Republic will always be on the side of democracy. Wherever, whenever and before whomever”, he stated.

Abinader stressed that the Dominican position It is not temporarybut consistent with a foreign policy that has defended free electoral processes, institutional transparency and respect for popular sovereignty. In this framework, he recalled the role of Santo Domingo in regional efforts to channel a democratic exit to the Venezuelan crisis.

The position of the Dominican head of state occurs in the midst of a rapid escalation of events in Venezuelawhich included explosions and attacks on various strategic points in Caracas and other states during the early hours of Saturday, the Washington announcement about the capture of Nicolas Maduro and its later presentation before judicial authorities in New York for charges linked to narcoterrorism.

In the following hours, high figures of chavismo reappeared publicly, while the absence of Maduro himselfwhich intensified internal uncertainty and international attention.

The Venezuelan Government denounced external aggression and decreed exceptional measures, while various countries and multilateral organizations activated emergency consultations.

Subsequently, President Donald Trump led a press conference in which he offered details of the operation to capture Maduro, who that same night was transferred to New York where he will face judicial charges.

The United States Attorney GeneralPam Bondi, announced this Saturday that they have criminal charges lifted against Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Floresafter the recent military attacks attributed by the US administration to strategic positions in Venezuela.

Pam Bondi announced that Maduro has been charged with Narco-terrorism conspiracy, conspiracy to import cocaine, trafficking in weapons and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess weapons and destructive devices against the United States.

“They (Maduro and Flores) will soon face all the fury of American justice on American soil in American courts,” the judicial official said.
