President Luis Abinader responded on Monday afternoon to former President of the Republic, Danilo Medina, who stated that the constitutional reform promoted by his Government is unnecessary and high risk, and also requires a referendum.
During La Semanal with the Press, the president reproached Danilo for the high-risk nature of the modification he wanted to make in order to be re-elected in 2019.
“The attempt to modify the reelection in 2019 was high risk, that was high risk. What we want to avoid is that happening again, that this attempt happens again, so that there is peace in Dominican society. And so that this is, as I have said, the first of the reforms, so that (…) it can serve as a basis for us to continue developing the country and doubling the economy by 2036,” he said.

In this regard, he reiterated that the reform proposal seeks “to bring peace of mind and not to be at the end of the four-year period – whether he will be re-elected or not – we are going to eliminate this questioning that arises every eight years.”
Remember that the constitutional reform proposal that Abinader is promoting is on four axes. The first is in the presidential election, for which he is proposing modifications to article 268 of the Constitution, which will deal with the form of Government; currently it says: “No modification to the Constitution may be made regarding the form of Government, which must always be civil, republican, democratic and representative.”
