Santo Domingo.— The Dominican president, Luis Abinaderstated this Saturday that the Dominican Government closely monitors the evolution of the political situation in Venezuela after the armed attack of States early this Saturday, which included the arrest of the Venezuelan ruler Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Floresand reiterated the country’s official position regarding the electoral process held in that nation in July 2024.
“The Dominican Government closely follows the evolution of events in Venezuela. Our country never recognized the legitimacy of the proclamation of Nicolas Maduro as president after the July 2024 elections,” said the president, recalling that this position was consistent with the foreign policy assumed by his administration.
Abinader stressed that, in line with this position, the Dominican Republic promoted the Declaration of Santo Domingo in August of that same year, a regional statement that demanded respect for the popular will expressed at the polls by the Venezuelan people.

The head of state also highlighted the historical ties between both nations and reiterated the Dominican willingness to accompany any effort that contributes to a democratic solution to the Venezuelan crisis.
“The solidarity between the Dominican and Venezuelan peoples is historic. Today we reiterate our willingness to collaborate with the reestablishment of democracy, peace and national harmony in Venezuela,” he stated.
Finally, President Abinader emphasized that the defense of democratic values is an invariable principle of Dominican foreign policy.
“The Dominican Republic will always be on the side of democracy. Wherever, whenever and before whomever,” he concluded.
