Santo Domingo.-The Dominican President, Luis Abinaderpromulgated the new Sunday Criminal Code of the Dominican Republic, marking a milestone by replacing the legislation that was in force since 1884.
After decades of failed attempts, the country achieves a substantial reform that updates a 141 -year -old criminal regulation, with the support of the main political parties.
The new Criminal Code represents a significant step in the protection of fundamental rights, the strengthening of citizen security and a more effective persecution of crimes.
Among its main advances include:
- Type of new crimessuch as feminicide, sicariato, cyberbullying, economic violence, dissemination of Deepfakes For blackmail, the pyramid scam, the non -regulated financial intermediation, the instigation of suicide, as well as all crimes against humanity, genocide, forced disappearance, eventual intent, conscious guilt, doping damage, self -management, false complaint and obstruction of justice. The penalty for rape within marriage or in relationships is also increased.
- Increase in prison sentences: up to 40 years, and in cases of serious infractions contest, up to 60 years.
- Incorporation of socio -judicial measuresas surveillance after condemnation compliance, registration of sexual aggressors and reeducation programs for the social reintegration of offenders.
- Criminal responsibility of legal personswhich allows to sanction companies for crimes committed by their representatives or by institutional negligence.
- More robust protection orders for victims of gender violence, intrafamily and any other form of aggression that threatens its integrity.

The new legislation also strengthens the fight against administrative corruption, by extending the prescription periods, hardening the sanctions and disqualifying those responsible to exercise public functions.
Likewise, prescription periods for sexual crimes against minors and people in vulnerability are extended, up to 30 years from the victim fulfilling the age of majority.
In addition to its sanctioning approach, the code incorporates a preventive and resocializing vision, recognizing citizen security as a shared responsibility between the State and society.
With this promulgation, which will enter into force within 12 months, the Dominican Republic leaves behind an obsolete legal framework and advances towards a modern criminal justice model, effective and focused on the protection of human rights, in accordance with the principles of a social and democratic state of law.
