Abinader sobre reforma constitucional: “No busco agradecimiento, sino fortalecer la democracia”

Santo Domingo.– The president Luis Abinader stated that his decision to promote the constitutional reform of 2024, which limits consecutive presidential re-electiondid not respond to a political interest nor the search for recognitionbut to the commitment to strengthen the dominican democracy.

During his participation in the circulation of the book “Reforms to the Dominican Political Constitution”, authored by Rafael Peralta Romero and Antoliano Peralta RomeroAbinader explained that his main motivation was to guarantee the democratic stability of the country.

The president recalled that before promoting the modification he consulted a political advisor about how your proposal would be received. “I thought he was going to tell me: they are going to thank you. But he told me: no one is going to thank you.“, he said between laughs.

He added: “Because the people who follow you think that it is a betrayal because you should have continued and even more so with a large majority where we could modify the constitution in Congress, the opposition will never recognize anything in that sense.”

He added that, despite the opinions, he acted in accordance with his convictions. “Nothing you do in politics or government should expect gratitude.“But to do what you think is right for the country and for history,” he said.

Abinader highlighted that the call “stone clause” included in the Constitution represents a guarantee for the democratic continuity of the country.

“In that clause is the guarantee of the stability of Dominican democracy,” he stressed.
