The president of the Republic, Louis Abinaderdebated this Friday with the president of the United Nations General Assembly, abdullah shahidon the sustainability of tourism, the economic recovery of this sector and the effects of climate change.
They addressed the issues during a meeting that both held this afternoon in the president’s office at the National Palace and in the panel “Sustainable Tourism and Economic Recovery”, also held at the Government House this Friday.
Abinader stressed that this is the first visit of abdullah shahid a Latin America and a good scenario to reiterate that the countries of the area, which depend mostly on tourism, despite being the ones that pollute the environment the least, are the most affected by the effects of climate change.
“We are encouraged to know that efforts are being made to maintain the discussion of this issue as a permanent part of the agenda of the United Nations General Assembly. For this, you can count on the full support of our country. We are proud to know that this visit is the first for President Shahid to Latin America. We appreciate his leadership, especially when it comes to promoting such vital issues for our countries,” Abinader said while chairing the panel.
While Shahid thanked the Dominican president for the opportunity to discuss these issues, which he said are of great interest due to the economic importance of the sector, especially in the recovery process from the COVID-19 pandemic.
On his side, the president of the Association of Hotels and Tourism of the Dominican Republic (Asonahores), Rafael Blanco Tejera, said that the recovery of tourism in the country has been focused on destination management, marketing and promotion and attraction of investments.
On his side, Paola Rainieri, vice president of the Punta Cana Group, said that sustainability must be the business model that makes local tourism competitive.
