The renewed infrastructure will provide the construction sector and the country with a greater capacity to produce cement and reduction of dependency on fuels fossils, in favor of the environment and sustainability.
Giving continuity to the expansion plans started in 2021 and reaching an investment amounting to USD$34MM to 2022, CEMEX inaugurated the Line 1 production furnace, at its San Pedro de Macorís cement plant, in a ceremony headed by the president Luis Abinader, authorities, unions, clients and CEMEX executives.
Jose Antonio Cabrera President of CEMEX Dominicana, Puerto Rico and Haiti, said that: “this and other strategic actions of the company are implemented within the framework of CEMEX’s expansion plans, as a response to our focus on innovation and sustainability to supply the demand of the Dominican market, thus contributing to the revitalization of the national economy and the generation of stable and quality employment”.
“We understand and assume the importance of supporting initiatives that strengthen the development of the country and the construction sector. For this reason, a few days ago we announced that state-of-the-art hydrogen technology is being implemented in this cement plant in San Pedro de Macorís; the first initiative of this nature in our territory”, added the executive.
in this same order, Víctor Bisonó, Minister of Industry, Commerce and Mipymes (MICM) offered a few words about the panorama of the industrial sector in the country and said that “the Dominican Republic is within the group of countries preferred by foreign companies to invest. We have a transparent and regulated framework that fosters our nation’s growth and economic development.”

Bisonó also highlighted CEMEX’s sustainable vision by commenting that the cement company supports local talent and products, from its employees, raw materials and production chain; and congratulated them for their pro-circular economy approach.
The 500 thousand tons of clinker resulting from the reactivation of Furnace 1 opens a new stage in the expansion process and cushions the dependence of the local cement industry on economic fluctuations in international markets; while reducing the environmental impact by avoiding CO2 from maritime transport.
Also, the following expansion stage of the company, which is already under development, aims to continue increasing production capacity and office, and have the most suitable facilities to fulfill its commitment to combat climate change.
To this end, the innovations of the next 5 years will consist of the increasing use of waste-derived fuels, improvement of the system of additions in favor of carbon-free raw materials, introduction of state-of-the-art additives and separators that favor a better cement performance, and expansion of the pioneering use of hydrogen as a catalyst in its two production lines.
Since CEMEX’s arrival in the Dominican Republic in 1995, it has invested more than 700 million USD in modernizing, expanding, and making the operation more sustainable, thus demonstrating its confidence in the country and supporting its growth in a sustained manner.
