The President of the Republic, Luis Abinaderhighlighted this Monday that the Dominican Republic maintains a good place in the Chapultepec Index about the Freedom of the press in the Americas of the Inter American Press Society (SIP), which values the freedom of expression and communication of nations.
He said that the country occupies a good place in the rankingsecond only to Chili -that he has first place-. The Dominican Republic was placed in second.
“We met againin a increase extraordinary in relation to 2020, in the first placeslast year was the first place and this year it is second place; above, Chili, and below us, Canada, the United States and other countries, Costa Rica, which we have always had an average level and that has helped us a lot,” he stressed.
The head of state referred to the issue during the question time at LA Semanal con la Prensa, a meeting he holds every Monday with journalists.
Abinader pointed out that all commissions that have been formed in the country to strengthen the freedom of expression“they have fulfilled their duty and what was assigned to them.”
He gave as an example the one that was formed for the modification of the Law 61-32Expression and diffusion of Thought, which he said is already in the National Congress, “with the proposal that the commission“.
It meant that the same has happened with the commission which was formed in relation to the approval of the law that created the National Intelligence Directorate (DNI), whose work he said “is in process.”
“So, those stocks have been rewarded again for having one of the highest levels of expression and diffusion and transparency with communication and journalism in Latin America with the Chapultepec index“said the president.

According to the Inter American Press Society (SIP), the position occupied by the country (second place in the ranking) “evidence that those who exercise the role of counterweight to the powers of the Dominican Government: media owners and executives, journalists integrated into associations and independent observers, they have and display proactive capacity to maintain achievements in the journalistic practice.
