Santo Domingo, DR. – A rocket that takes off from Dominican lands It could have been a dream, but today it is beginning to become a real possibility: that Dominicans have a satellite in space launched from Flints.
This was stated by the president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinaderduring his Accountability 2026 speech in which with a happy voice and face he announced the signing of a historic agreement for the development of a world-class data hub and the construction of a commercial spaceport in Oviedo, Pedernales province, with an investment that exceeds 600 million dollars.
The president explained that the agreement contemplates the installation of a high-level data center, the connection through submarine cables with technology centers in the United States and the consolidation of the Dominican Republic as a strategic node of digital connectivity between North, Central and South America.
“This agreement will make us the most competitive country for investment by technology companies,” he stated.
He indicated that, after three years of negotiations, the agreement was signed this month with the American company responsible for the project, as part of a strategy to position the country in sectors with high added value.
“The Dominican Republic continues to position itself as a reliable destination for the most advanced technological investments in the world,” he said.
Space port in Pedernales
In the same announcement, the head of state revealed that the agreement includes the development of a commercial spaceport in Oviedo.
“This is a pioneering infrastructure that opens the doors of our country to the global space economy,” he said.
The project has the support of American investors and the participation of Berton Katly, who, as the president explained, was NASA’s director of operations for decades and leads the specialized team in charge of the initiative.
Abinader assured that the goal is that before May 2028 a satellite or a rocket can be sent into space from Pedernales.
“We are going to send a satellite or a rocket into space from Pedernales, so that they believe it,” he said.
The president highlighted that this investment is part of the Government’s future vision to diversify the economy, attract foreign capital and turn the country into a regional benchmark in technological innovation and space economy.
The growth of Pedernales is not only limited to tourism, but also expands to innovation, with the commitment to technological progress being one of the goals of this impact.
Agreement with Google
In addition, he stressed the importance of the agreements signed with large companies such as Google, in which the telecommunications and artificial intelligence giant chose the country to build, with an investment of more than 500 million dollars, the first international digital exchange port in Latin America and the eighth in the world.
With this initiative, he noted, the Dominican Republic will become the regional gateway for large technology platforms, consolidating its position as a digital hub and key point of connectivity in the hemisphere.
Projects that have been developed in Pedernales
Since Pedernales, Abinader’s Government has promoted tourism development with the construction of ports, infrastructure, foreign investment, as well as the continuous training of the citizens of that district.
Pedernales, which stands out for its virgin beaches with turquoise waters, Bahía de las Águilas being its greatest attraction. It is also famous for its untamed nature, the Hoyo de Pelempito and its dry climate.
