Santo Domingo. – The president Luis Abinader reported that the Government is implementing a comprehensive plan to protect lives, property and restore normality in areas affected by the tropical storm Melissawhich has remained almost stationary and with persistent rains in much of the country.
During a press conference, the president explained that measures are being taken to address damage in the agricultural sector and guarantee assistance to affected families, especially people with limited resources. Likewise, work is being done on the restoration of damaged homes and in the delivery of food and basic assistance through the Presidency’s Social Plan and other institutions.
The Head of State added that the critical infrastructureincluding roads, aqueducts and hydraulic installations, in coordination with the Ministry of Public Works, the National Institute of Drinking Water and Sewage (INAPA) and other competent organizations, with the aim of minimizing the effects of the storm and ensuring normality in the lives of citizens.
Abinader stressed that Melissa is a storm erratic and almost stationarywith a prolonged effect on the national territory, and which represents one of the atmospheric events with the greatest impact in decades. Therefore, he called on the population to follow prevention measuresremain attentive to official alerts and prioritize the protection of lives and property.
The president concluded by assuring that the government maintains constant surveillance and that all institutions are prepared to respond quicklyensuring that damage is reduced and economic and social activities are quickly restored in affected areas.
