Abinader, a leader?

Abinader, ¿un líder?

With the beginning yesterday by the Caribbean of a cycle of reports on the most and least effective officials of the present Government, which began with Luis Abinader at the head of the list of the “most efficient”, and because his “leadership and style of govern”, we are concerned about whether the president meets the conditions of a leader.

It takes us away from the topic of the series of journalistic works, but it is opportune to specify that Abinader is the main leader of the PRM and that the text highlights that he has shown signs of being a good manager; that he knows how to take advantage of the capabilities of his people and, furthermore, that he has expertly waded through various setbacks simultaneously: the economic crisis, the pandemic, the Haitian crisis, and the war in Ukraine.

When bringing up the question of leadership, it is worth remembering “sine qua non” elements and conditions that, according to sociology and political science texts, define the true leader.

We will not mention names of current political leaders, so as not to offend sensibilities and because comparing is almost always hateful.

Leaders abound in the country, and not only in politics, but fragmented, valued only in the area in which they operate, perhaps a reflection of the division that corrodes society.

The first thing is that being a leader is not achieved by inheritance, fortune or chance; not by a stroke of luck, but it is necessary to run all the risks and respond to the challenges posed by the progress and well-being of the people.

Other qualities must also come together, not necessarily all in the same person; Being a tireless worker in search of goals, personal greatness and a strong shell to contain envy, betrayal and gossip.

The most renowned have charisma, that angel that was attributed, for example, along with the previous ones, to José Francisco Peña Gómez. In many historical analyzes it has been pointed out, on the other hand, that Juan Bosch lacked personal courage, a vocation for power and persistence, which was innate in Joaquín Balaguer.

Perhaps this is a disquisition that takes us away from the precision that Abinader heads the list of the “most efficient” officials, but it is not superfluous, because it could help the reader to elucidate which leaders who are now in “the middle” embody some of these intrinsic leadership qualities.

The entrance Abinader, a leader? was first published on newspaper the caribbean.
