The Federal Police (PF) concluded that the former director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) Alexandre Ramagem was responsible for advising former president Jair Bolsonaro with strategies to attack the country’s democratic institutions.
The conclusion is in the report in which the PF indicted Ramagem, Bolsonaro and 35 others accused of coup d’état and violent abolition of the democratic rule of law. THE secrecy has been broken this Tuesday (26) by the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of the so-called coup investigation.
According to the PF, Ramagem worked to produce disinformation with the aim of subsidizing Bolsonaro with attacks on the electoral system, electronic voting machines, the Judiciary and its members. The information was read by Bolsonaro during lives held on social media.
“A comparison of the facts listed demonstrates that Alexandre Ramagem acted proactively, on the one hand, as head of Abin, requesting and receiving documents that attacked the Brazilian electoral system, on the other, advising and providing then-president Jair Bolsonaro with strategies to attacks on democratic institutions, the Judiciary and its respective members, as well as the electoral voting system, especially electronic voting machines”, states the investigation.
In the investigators’ assessment, Ramagem acted in command of Abin with a misuse of purpose to provide information to the group that planned the coup.
“The illicit nature of the strategies developed by the then general director of Abin included the widespread attacks on electronic voting machines, campaigns to delegitimize the Federal Supreme Court, attempts to intimidate and restrict the jurisdictional function of its members and the development of plans to interfere in investigations within the scope of the Federal Police”, added the PF.
Other side
Agência Brasil contacted Alexandre Ramagem’s defense and is awaiting a response. The space is open for manifestation.
The report seeks contact with Bolsonaro’s defense and is open to including his position in the text. Yesterday (25), at a press conference, the former president declared that he “never discussed a coup with anyone.” According to Bolsonaro, all measures taken during his government were carried out “within the four lines of the Constitution”.
