Abel Martínez calls for greater control at the border

Abel Martínez pide mayor control en la frontera

Santo Domingo.– After the criticism issued by some international organizations regarding the deportations of foreigners with irregular immigration status, mainly Haitians without documentation carried out by the Dominican Republic, the former presidential candidate of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) Abel Martínez, expressed its firm support for these repatriations.

Through a press release, the former mayor of Santiago stressed that the increase in illegal immigration has generated serious challenges for Dominican society, affecting key areas such as education, health and security. “The pressure on our essential services directly compromises the quality of life and the future of Dominicans. In that sense, we affirm that deportations must continue without hesitation, always respecting the human rights of citizens, but a more solid and effective border control is also required on a permanent basis.”

Abel Martínez also observed with interest the approach of the former president and recently elected American president Donald Trump, in relation to the immigration issue, highlighting his policy of secure borders and the elimination of networks that facilitate illegal immigration, considering that “Trump’s position reflects the reality that the Dominican Republic faces and that has been in part our position in that all foreigners with a visa to the country are welcome, but illegality must be closed and for that it is essential to adopt a firm and forceful position to protect national interests.”

“We have always said that in order to confront irregular immigration, we must detect and eradicate the mafias that are dedicated to the illicit trafficking of migrants on our border, which have the complicity of various sectors of both nations and move millions of pesos, added to the smuggling of weapons and drugs, among other illicit acts,” said Abel, also highlighting the importance of establishing rigorous controls for those foreigners who legally reside in the country, to guarantee that they comply with the laws and do not represent a burden for the State.

Martínez, former president of the Chamber of Deputies, also emphasized the need to combat networks dedicated to document falsification, considering that, “it is a persistent problem that has facilitated the illegal entry and stay of foreigners in the country. “We urge the authorities to intensify efforts to detect and eliminate these structures, as well as to impose exemplary sanctions against those who participate in this illegal activity that compromises national security.”
