“We thank His Holiness Pope Francis for this blessing granted to us by the first Paraguayan Cardinal, Monsignor Adalberto Martínez, Archbishop of Asunción,” wrote the President of the Republic, Mario Abdo Benítez.
He added that with his wife, the First Lady Silvana Abdo, they have already spoken with Monsignor Martínez to congratulate him and accompany him with their prayers.

Pope Francis announced today a consistory for the appointment of 21 new cardinals, among which is the one who will be the first cardinal of Paraguay, the Archbishop of Asunción, Adalberto Martínez Flores.
Martínez Flores will thus be the country’s first cardinal, although he had the Paraguayan nationalized Spaniard Cristóbal López Romero, who is archbishop of Rabat (Morocco).
