Abdo Benítez aims to maintain the democratic model

Yesterday Friday, during his participation in the Summit for Democracy, the President of the Republic, Mario Abdo Benítez, highlighted that a solidly built democracy is essential for the development of countries and is the way forward to obtain a more equitable and free society.

The meeting, organized by the North American president, Joe Biden, took place virtually, summoning heads of state, various referents from the private and civil sector, as well as great world leaders.

FUNDAMENTAL
On the occasion, Abdo Benítez also expressed his concern about the growth of the ideological distance and referred to the different extremes that end up not being recognized as political actors, which he described as an “erosion factor” for the rise of democracy. It, for the president, must be synonymous with transparency, commitment, accountability and above all, participation.

“It is knowing how to win and lose within the rule of law. I believe in democracy understood as a collective human right at the service of the truth; representative of the social ”, he indicated, adding to this idea that its basic foundation is freedom.

DISTRUST
For the Paraguayan president, democracy as such converges as a key ally to promote social justice, as well as a guarantor of opportunities for all, with independent and strengthened institutions that allow societies and young people to see in it the hope of a better future .

On the other hand, “it is striking that studies on the State of democracy show that 68% of the world population lives political regimes that concentrate power in a single person or elites,” he said, and stressed that these figures show a delicate trend towards autocracy.

In this context, he invited to reflect on citizen mistrust of democracy, since knowing these evidences should deepen on the global commitment to protect the countries that do defend democratic principles.

MODEL
Likewise, it admitted that the mistakes made, impunity, as a reflection of a weak Judicial Power, the prevailing corruption that seeps like moisture that is difficult to remove in all branches of the State, are some of the great problems faced in Latin America and that increases this discontent.

“The fight to maintain the democratic model is not easy but I am certain that we are called to rebuild that trust,” he finally expressed.
