An unfortunate situation occurred in the rural area of the municipality of Valle de San Juan (Tolima), where a man identified as Diego Javier Porte, 28 years old, an environmental engineer by profession and amateur athlete, was trapped in a waterfall while carrying out recreational climbing activities.
Due to the difficulties of access to the area, died waiting to be rescued. Major Luis Fernando Vélez, director of the Civil Defense in Tolima, provided details about the emergency, which continues to be attended to by the relief agency.
The young man was with several friends and, apparently, was suspended while trying to reach one of the difficult-to-access waterfalls.

“Around 6:00 in the afternoon on Sunday, November 9, a group of water rescue volunteers tried to enter the Calica farm, where their colleagues were, providing the coordinates of the location. of the victim; However, it was not possible to rescue him,” said the major.
The municipality’s Volunteer Fire Department and logistics operators arrived at the scene, who provided support to rescue the young man, who was unconscious at the bottom of the waterfall.
Unfortunately, after more than 20 hours of work, the authorities confirmed that the victim was found without vital signs. At the moment, The extraction of the body is being carried out to transfer it to the place where the vehicles are, taking into account that the journey is more than 4 hours in open fields.

“He was rappelling down a waterfall, apparently to strengthen this place as a tourist attraction and offer travelers one more option to practice extreme sports.. Unfortunately, he lost his life,” the director concluded.
Finally, It is expected that in the next few hours the authorities will be able to transport the lifeless body of the young athlete to Ibagué, his hometown, so that his family can give him a Christian burial.
