Andy García Lorenzo, one of the imprisoned protesters of July 11 in Santa Clara, was released from prison this Wednesday to continue his sentence in an open regime camp.
As announced by brother-in-law, Jonatan López, on his Facebook wall, the 24-year-old was “temporarily released”, pending “continue serving his sentence in an open court.” In the same message, López warned: “Happy because we will be with him, but the battle is not over. They are innocent.” His partner, Andy’s sister, spoke in the same vein. Roxanne Garcia: “My brother is not the only one, there are hundreds of political prisoners who need us.”
The change of sentence occurred in the appeal trial of García Lorenzo, held in the Provincial Court of Santa Clara this Wednesday.
The young man had previously been convicted to four years in prison in a trial held in the same city on January 10, along with 15 other protesters who took to the streets on July 11. The Prosecutor’s Office originally requested seven years in prison for him for public disorder, contempt and attack.
In the same message, López warned: “Happy because we will be with him, but the battle is not over. They are innocent.”
In sentence It was determined among the “proven facts” that the 16 defendants violated the city restrictions in force at the time to mitigate the spread of covid-19 and “took advantage of the unfavorable situation in our territory” to “proclaim their countrymen to follow them at the time who shouted out loud, among other words, ‘Díaz Canel Singado [sic]Police Pinga, nobody was going to stop them.
At that time, Roxana García did not hesitate to attack the process to which the young man was subjected. “You cannot say that it was a trial, because she was a clown, it was a paripé, what they did there was a circus,” the young woman recalled. in a video last april“because the evidence didn’t show it, because it was the word of the police against theirs, because it was all a farce.”
Since he was detained, his family has been one of the most active in defending political prisoners and freedom of expression, and has repeatedly denounced State Security harassment.
Andy’s father, Nedel García Pacheco, was stabbed on February 4, while he was fishing with some friends. An acquaintance began to hurl insults at the imprisoned son, then lunged at him with a knife.
At that time, Roxana blamed State Security for the event: “Because in case it is not directly to blame, it is indirectly due to all the hatred it has spread through the media against the July 11 protesters. “.
