A woman is murdered on the South Caribbean Coast; It is the tenth femicide of May

Once again, sexist violence and hate crimes continue to claim the lives of Nicaraguan women. On the night of Monday, May 13, Lilliam del Socorro Taleno Torrez, 43, was hacked to death by her ex-partner, making her the tenth victim of femicide in the first 14 days of this month.

According to information from the official media, the woman, originally from the La Providencia community, located in Nueva Guinea, South Caribbean Coast; She was at her house when Enrique Lazo Jirón, 46, appeared.

Witnesses reported that the couple had separated more than two weeks ago, but the man refused to accept the breakup. Therefore, Lazo Jirón demanded that Taleno Torrez continue with her relationship, but she remained in her position of not wanting to return to her attacker and that led to an argument with a fatal outcome.

The attacker took out his machete and attacked the woman. He caused serious injuries to different parts of her body. The neighbors took the victim to the Jacinto Hernández Hospital, however, she died due to multiple injuries. The aggressor, however, fled after committing the crime.

Hours later, the Police found the criminal “hiding in his mother’s house”, arrested him and took the machete as evidence. This femicide caused the victim’s two children, a 14-year-old boy and an eight-year-old boy, to become orphans.

So far in 2024, organizations and news media have recorded 34 femicides, a “worrying” figure that already represents half of the total murders of women recorded last year.

The femicide statistics, according to the Women’s Network Against Violence (RMCV), reflect the level of violence against women that has been escalating since the sociopolitical and human rights crisis that the country has been experiencing since 2018. In addition, the increase in femicides is an example of how violent the country has become and the levels of impunity that prevail.
