A woman climber dies in Popocatépetl

The Secretary of the Interior of the state of Puebla confirmed that this Wednesday, June 22, four people from Tlalmanalco, State of Mexico, ascended the Popocatépetl volcano and approached a very dangerous area, 300 meters from the crater.

The official commented that at dawn from Wednesday to Thursday, the guide that accompanied these climbers left them abandoned in the area, and on Thursday afternoon a call for help was received at the Amecameca Command Center, activating the protocols of coordination of the Izta-Popo National Park, in which both the brigades of the State of Mexico and those of Puebla participate.

According to the first reports, when the climbers were near the crater, an explosion was recorded and they were hit by volcanic rocks, and the woman died after being hit by rocks ejected by the volcano.

The other climbers, trying to seek refuge, fell into a ravine 50 meters deep, which caused difficulties in the rescue work.

Another of the hikers who was found alive this Thursday had a broken femur and ribs, as well as a climbing tool buried in the body.
