A woman and her boyfriend, murdered by her ex-partner in Granma

Havana/The murder of Darmis Ismarai Figueredo Rodríguez, 38, along with that of Junior Rosa Rivera, the man she shared her life with, 43, on the night of January 7, has been confirmed by independent platforms as the third feminicide so far this year. They were both killed by her ex-partner, identified as Adrián Corrales by local sources.

The attacker, according to the version offered by the Niover Licea communicator’s page, threatened to kill the woman’s grandmother, mother and sister and used a machete in the double homicide. The aggressor was arrested shortly after, according to the same independent page, although the official media have not provided any news of the event.

This case occurred just one day after the second femicide of the year. Magaly Aragona 58-year-old nurse, was murdered in the rural community of La Yaya, in the municipality of Jatibonico, province of Sancti Spíritus. The woman, who worked in a prison camp, was intercepted when she returned to her home and died of asphyxiation, according to information disclosed on social networks and confirmed by this newspaper through local sources.

The alleged perpetrator of the crime was Yoel Soriano Santana, a common inmate with a criminal record.

According to Licea, the alleged perpetrator of the crime was Yoel Soriano Santana, a common inmate with a criminal record. The attack occurred between 1:00 and 3:00 in the afternoon, in a cane field in the La Yaya Popular Council. Licea claimed that the victim was sexually assaulted before being murdered.

The total number of sexist murders last year on the Island was, until now, at 42 –according to the count of 14ymedio– based on the records of both organizations and social media reports. Although the figure is lower than those registered in 2024 (52), there are still cases that are being investigated and that, if confirmed, could increase that number. Yo Sí Te Creo and Alas Tensas are still investigating 12 more possible cases.

Last year, based on the figures from these platforms, a EFE analysis indicated that 81% of the attackers of the victims of gender violence were the partners of the murdered Cuban women, while five of the feminicides had criminal records or were reported by the victim before committing the crime.

The activists have insisted on demanding “a comprehensive law on gender violence, shelters for women at risk, protection protocols, transparent official data and effective public prevention policies.”

Crimes continue to accumulate in citizen records

Alas Tensas has denounced that, despite the regime’s efforts to project an image of institutional response to violence against women and girls, crimes continue to accumulate in citizen records. The organization emphasizes that the measures announced as “advances” do not translate into effective prevention or real protection for victims.

From 2019 until this Wednesday, the Alas Tensas and Yo Sí Te Creo observatories in Cuba have documented 315 murders due to sexist violence on the Island, “a figure that represents only an under-record” since many cases do not come to light and the updated record that the Government has had since last year is not public.

At the regional level, Cuba It was the fourth country with the highest rate of femicides in Latin America in 2024, a position it shares with Puerto Rico and Bolivia, with 1.4 murders per 100,000 women. The figures, however, are calculated with the official data that the authorities provided to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the organization that prepared the report, that is, with the 76 cases that were tried in the Cuban courts that year, regardless of when they were committed, so the number of deaths due to sexist violence that actually occurred continues to be ignored.
