MIAMI, United States. – The Cuban Institute of Meteorology (INSMET) warned this Monday on the persistence of a wide area of low pressure in the northwest of the Caribbean Sea, which is generating an extensive area of clouds, showers, rain and thunderstorms.
According to the INSMET Forecast Center report, this area “has become better organized in the last 12 hours,” which could lead to the formation of a depression or tropical storm “in the coming days.”
For his part, meteorologist Elier Piña, in the issuance of the Television News At noon today, he said that in the next 24 hours the conditions will be “more favorable” for this organism to become a depression or tropical storm.
He also added that despite the uncertainty, the trajectory models indicate that the low pressure zone will move towards the Gulf of Mexico. Mexicowhich will bring it closer to the western part of Cuban territory.
“Regardless of the development and future trajectory of this system, heavy rainfall is expected in the western and central regions of Cuba in the coming days,” the INSMET Forecast Center also warned.
The forecasted rains could be strong and intense in some localities, especially from the evening of Tuesday, September 24. In the last 12 hours, significant amounts of rainfall have already been recorded in provinces such as Matanzas and the central region of the country (45.8 millimeters in Playa Girón and 44 millimeters in Ciego de Ávila).
For these reasons, INSMET urges the population to closely monitor weather reports in the coming days and pay special attention to the recommendations of the Forecast Center, which is keeping a “close watch on this developing system.”
