A traffic accident in Pinar del Río leaves 48 injured, five seriously

(EFE) .- The overturning of a passenger bus on a highway in Pinar del Río has left a balance, so far, of 48 people injured – including three minors – and five serious patients, as reported this Wednesday the official press.

The injured are treated at different hospitals in the area. As announced by the director of the Abel Santamaría Cuadrado hospital, Orestes Moya Álvarez, a patient has a “closed abdominal trauma with liquid.” The others, he added, have “head and chest trauma and fractures.”

One of the injured, 52 years old, commented to the newspaper ‘Guerrillero’ that the bus “turned to the right, then to the left and could not be incorporated further”

One of the injured, 52 years old, told the newspaper Guerrilla that the bus “turned to the right, then to the left and could not join any further”.

According to official figures, in 2021 there were a total of 8,354 traffic accidents, an increase of 8.32% (632) compared to 2020. On the other hand, deaths from this type of accident increased by 24%.

The main causes of traffic accidents in Cuba, highlights the National Road Safety Commission (CNSV), are the driver’s inattention, failure to comply with the right of way and speeding.

But the poor condition of the roads and the aging vehicle fleet on the island also have an influence, where cars that are more than 50 years old travel.
