(EFE).- The massive traffic accident happened this Wednesday in the municipality of Los Arabosin Matanzas, left at least five people dead and 42 injured, the island’s state media reported.
The event occurred when a truck carrying passengers collided with a tree because its driver lost control of the vehicle due to a bad maneuver at the wheel, explained the traffic chief in Matanzas, Major Eddy Estévez, quoted in a note published in the Facebook profile of the Government of the province.
Initially, four deaths had been reported, but one more was added when the person was transferred to the Mario Muñoz hospital in the city of Colón, according to the Cuban News Agency (ACN).
Among the injured –20 men and 25 women– there are four who remain in critical condition in that hospital, and two minors -8 and 18 years old- were sent to a pediatric institution in the capital city of Matanzas.

During Christmas and the end-of-year festivities, road trips frequently increase, as many Cubans travel to spend those moments with their families. The consumption of alcohol at this time, the rush to reach the destination and the overload of passengers in the vehicles also contribute to the occurrence of more accidents on the roads.
A recent report from the National Highway Commission (CNA) stated that between January and October 2022, 566 people died and 6,175 were injured in Cuba due to 8,187 traffic accidents.
At the end of October, the accident rate indicators on the Island showed an increasing trend in relation to the years 2019, 2020 and 2021, according to that evaluation.
The National Highway Commission points out that among the main causes of accidents on the streets and highways is failure to control the vehicle, violating the right of way, lane invasion and speeding.
To this is added the increase in the circulation of mopeds, the deficient state of the country’s road network due to lack of maintenance, little road education and the presence of a fleet characterized by its age, with cars with more than 50 years.
In all of 2021, there were 8,354 accidents that represented an increase of 8.32% (632) compared to 2020 and left 589 deaths, while in 2020, the 7,712 accidents reported on Cuban roads left 475 deaths.
