A toxic cloud of chlorine that emanated from a chemical plant affected residents of Monte Caseros

A toxic cloud allegedly the product of a bad maneuver by an operator in a chemical products storage plant, affected this Saturday residents of the Corrientes town of Monte Caseros, who went to hospitals although they were discharged hours later.

“In the discharge procedure of a chemical product, there was a a chlorine vapor leak, for 1 minute 30 seconds“wrote the company Aguas de Corrientes on its official Twitter account

He further indicated that the incident, “does not and will not alter the drinking water supply service or its quality”and that “the plant was always in operation”, while “regretting” if the event “could have caused discomfort to some neighbors.”

The fact occurred at the chemical storage plant of the company Aguas de Corrientes SA in Monte Caseros, located in the southeast of the province of Corrientes, when a driver who was transporting chlorine allegedly accidentally dumped the contents of the load into a wrong tank, reported the Mega 95.5 radio station from Corrientes.

The main person affected was the driver who had to be treated by a private emergency company and then admitted to the Samuel W Robinson Hospital.

In addition, many were affected as a result of the toxic cloud. people and residents of the place who went to the local hospital and private sanatoriums, where they were discharged hours later.

This type of toxin can cause irritation to the mucosa with which it comes into contact, in this case, the respiratory, producing symptoms such as shortness of breath and irritation, and the ocular mucosa, generating tears.

According to initial inquiries, the driver placed the liquid chlorine in an aluminum container and the chemical reaction between the chlorine and the metal produced a cloud of toxic chlorine gas.

When the chlorine comes into contact with the metal container, it produces an immediate reaction as bubbling and an increase in temperature due to the chemical reaction that occurs,” detailed the local media.
