A total of 12 injured in an accident in Mayarí

A three-year-old boy, identified as Yuniesqui Simales Peña, is one of the 12 injured in a traffic accident that occurred on the highway that connects the municipalities of Mayarí and Moa, in the province of Holguín, around 7:00 a.m. 30 p.m. last Saturday.

According to reports from Citizen Portal of Mayaríthe minor is treated at the Octavio Concepción pediatric hospital, and his situation is serious, while Yudelkis Peña Fonseña is treated at the Vladimir Ilich Lenin Teaching General Hospital, also in serious condition.

The minor first arrived at the Mayarí hospital and had to receive assisted ventilation and emergency surgery, then he was transferred to the pediatric hospital, the nursing manager, Elsa Idalmis Aguilar, told the state portal.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the injured were in an animal-drawn vehicle where 11 people were traveling plus the driver, when a rental vehicle left the area known as Vuelta Larga, lost control and hit them.

Among the other injured are four more minors: Rosa Amalia Simales Peña (9 months old), Asli Alejandra Pelegrín Aldana (2 years old), Moisés Sánchez Batista (6 years old) and Leandro David Jardines Pérez (15 years old). Also Rosa Aldana Pérez, Yarisley Pérez López, Sucel Bastita Ruíz, Yudelvis Peña Fonseca, Daniela Verdecia Batista and Ramón Sánchez Palmero, the latter driving the animal-drawn car and was transferred “for orthopedic surgery,” the publication notes.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the injured were in an animal-drawn vehicle where 11 people plus the driver were traveling.

In October of last year, a holguinero died in a motorcycle accidentbut this time because of a hole in the road.

In another recent event, in Pinar del Riothe overturning of a bus left 48 people injured, including five minors.

The National Road Safety Commission has pointed out that the main causes of traffic accidents in Cuba are the driver’s inattention, failure to comply with the right of way and speeding. The poor condition of the roads and the aging vehicle fleet also have an influence.

Added to this are the poor signage on the streets and the lack of lighting, as well as the lack of driver education.

According to the National Road Safety Commission, there were 589 deaths due to traffic accidents in 2021, an increase of 24% compared to 2020.

The secretary of the Commission, Reinaldo Becerra, said in previous statements that last year there were 8,354 traffic accidents, an increase of 8.32% compared to the previous one.
