More than a thousand students could lose the academic year due to the national teachers strike from the Public Higher Pedagogical Education School of Piura, who are demanding salary increases.
Yesterday, teachers from high schools in Piura, Sullana, Ayabaca and Huancabamba marched through the streets of the city, accompanied by students, to demand that the central government increase their salaries.
“We are asking for the implementation and regulation of Law 31653, which establishes a decent salary for teachers and their categorization, regulation of the law on the appointment of contracted teachers, implementation of financial support for the licensing of institutes and payment of social debt that is not paid to teachers despite the fact that they have completed all the paperwork. The solution is in the hands of the Ministry of Economy,” said the teachers.

They added that, if the national strike continues, students in the Piura region could lose the academic year. “It is not possible that a teacher is paid only S/2400 for 40 hours, while a teacher in a regular basic education center is paid S/3100 for 30 hours. It is not fair that teachers who train teachers are paid this way. There are a thousand students in danger of losing the academic year, since if we project to January there are no schools and where they would do their internships, that is why we demand an immediate solution,” said the teacher, Mario Luciano Sandoval Rosas.
They warned that if there is no solution by Monday, they will begin the third week of an indefinite national strike.
“We hope that the central government will give in. If there are no concrete measures, we will continue with the indefinite national strike on Monday, we will radicalize the measures and we could even start an indefinite hunger strike at a national level,” Sandoval Rosas stressed.
