The Ninth Court of the Cali Circuit issued a conviction against teacher Farley J. López H., found guilty of the crime of aggravated sexual abuse of a minor under 14 years of age. The victim of the incident is María Camila Correa Montalvorecognized for having been elected Miss Bogotá in 2021, who decided to publicly denounce her case after years of silence.

According to the investigation carried out by the Prosecutor’s Office, the events occurred in May 2008 when the victim was 12 years old at a school in the capital of Valle del Cauca. The investigation carried out by the accusing body indicates that López H., taking advantage of his status as a teacher at the institution, asked the minor to take some materials to a room that was located behind the school theater. In that place, the teacher took her by the arm and, after lying her against him, proceeded to touch her private parts.

After the difficult episode that marked his adolescence, in 2010 criminal proceedings began against the aforementioned teacher. for the crime of aggravated sexual acts with a minor under 14 years of age.
During the trial, the judicial office considered that there was compelling evidence that demonstrated the criminal responsibility of López H. Among them, the testimony of the victim, her mother and friends and forensic psychological reports and expert elements collected during the investigation. After evaluating the evidence, 17 years after what happened, the judge handed down a conviction and announced that in the coming days the hearing will be held to read the sentence, which could exceed 12 years in prison.
In an interview with W Radio, María Camila Correa stated that although finding justice in her case was not an easy task, she never thought about giving up: «In Colombia justice limps, but it arrives, I am proof of that. I was a very privileged girl, I studied in one of the best schools in Cali, and I decided to never give up, not only for myself, but also for myself, for my mother who always believed me, I did it for the women who stay silent out of fear, who perhaps have no one to support them in these cases.

The case revives the debate about protection mechanisms for minors and the need to strengthen care for victims of sexual violence in Colombia. The authorities recalled that these types of crimes do not easily prescribe and that anyone who has suffered abuse can go to the Prosecutor’s Office or specialized hotlines to report.
