A deprived of freedom at the Cucama Correction and Rehabilitation Center, in The Romandied early Sunday morning as a result of a fight with another inmate.
By confirming the death of Algenis Mejía, alias Vokero, the General Directorate of Penitentiary and Correctional Services (DGSPC) explained that the incident occurred as a result of a confrontation with another inmate identified as Juan Manuel Constanzo
According to the DGSPC, the perpetrator, with a short sharp object, caused several wounds that blinded Mejía’s life while he was receiving medical attention at the public hospital in Villa Hermosa, La Romana.
Through a statement issued by the agency’s press department, it was reported that, in the record of removal of the body, it is indicated that the death occurred due to multiple wounds of knife.
Mejía completed a conviction of 20 years of confinement in that Correction and Rehabilitation Center, while the perpetrator Juan Alcántara Constanzo has nine months of preventive detention.

Immediately the general director of the DGSPC, Roberto Hernández Basilio, appointed a commission to investigate the causes that gave rise to the incident that culminated in the death of Mejía, who was imprisoned in the aforementioned penitentiary center.
The DGSPC expressed his weigh for the incident that occurred with this inmate and expresses solidarity with his family.
