The Indec will announce the measurement of the indigence and poverty baskets for May on June 21.

A family of four living in the City of Buenos Aires needed in May to receive income of at least $54,380.24 to not be considered indigent, $99,653.25 to be included in poverty and $153,816.15 to be considered middle class, according to data released by the Buenos Aires General Directorate of Statistics and Censuses.

In this way, the expenses of the Basic Food Basket (CBA), which mark the limit of indigence, had an increase of 4.24% in May, which reached 61.76% in the accumulated of the last twelve months.

The situation in the year-on-year comparison is the reverse, with a higher increase in the CBA compared to the baskets that measure poverty and the middle class

In the case of the Total Basic Basket (CBT), which establishes the poverty ceiling, the monthly increase was 4.60% and the year-on-year increase was 57.46%while the Total Basket (CT), which in different proportions delimits the fragile middle sector, the middle class and the well-off sectors, rose 4.54% in the month and 58.58% in relation to May of last year.

The indicated amounts do not include the payment of housing rent or common expenses, as they are not considered consumption expenses.

The evolution of the baskets in May reflected the adjustment of rates of some public services, which are not part of the indigence expenseswhich is why the most vulnerable sectors had the lowest percentage increase for the month.

However, the situation in the year-on-year comparison is the reverse, with a higher increase in the CBA compared to the baskets that measure poverty and the middle class.

The Indec will announce the measurement of the indigence and poverty baskets for May next Tuesday, June 21

Unlike the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (Indec), which only recognizes the categories of poor and indigent, the Buenos Aires Department has six social strata in its classification.

In May, the resources necessary to be included in each category were the following: in a situation of indigence, up to $54,380.23; non-indigent poverty, from $54,380.24 to $99,653.24; and non-vulnerable poor, from $99,653.25 to $123,052.91.

In the case of the medium fragile sector, from $123,052.92 to $153,816.14; middle class, from $153,816.15 to $492,211.67; and affluent sectors, $492,211.68 or more.

The Indec will announce the measurement of the indigence and poverty baskets for May next Tuesday, June 21.
