A policeman shoots at an ambulance in Cuba and kills his ex-partner

An officer of the Guantánamo Motorized Police shot this Thursday at two people who were on board an ambulance on Paseo Street, between 1 and 2 West. The first of the victims, a woman who had allegedly been the officer’s partner, died at the hospital, according to reported the local official newspaper overcome. As for the second, the ambulance driver, is still undergoing surgery.

The newspaper indicates that the officer was dressed as a civilian and that he fired his service weapon at the woman, whom some users identify as Damixi, a doctor from the Agostinho Neto General Teaching Hospital. Her companion, an ambulance worker from the Integrated Medical Emergency System (Sium), is undergoing an operation at the hospital itself, as confirmed to overcome his surgical assistant director.

Although the newspaper describes the event as a “crime of passion”, many readers of the news report that it is a new case of femicide. The note, still “under construction based on testimonies,” says the newspaper, indicates that the perpetrator of the crime “apparently” turned himself in to the Police after his attack, “without putting up any resistance.” However, several users who claim to be hospital workers indicate that the center is under surveillance by the Special Troops and that the murderer fled.

The Sium vehicle, according to several of the commentators, was registered in the Guantanamo municipality of El Salvador. Users also affirm that the woman was shot in the head and another in the neck by her, and that she was married to the driver, although she had separated from the police officer some time ago. In addition, several acquaintances of the victims report that the woman had a little girl, although they do not clarify whether she is the daughter of her attacker or her current partner.

Numerous commentators lamented the possession of weapons by the Traffic Police –known in Cuba as little horses– and the scant psychological evaluation to which, in his opinion, the Ministry of the Interior submits its agents.

The murder of the young Zinédine Zidan Batista in Santa Clara, in July 2021, also alarmed the public about the recent propensity of Police officers to fire their service weapons in situations of tension, which could have been resolved without the shooting of those involved.

If this crime is classified as a femicide, it would be the first recorded this year by independent platforms, since the Cuban government does not provide official figures on how many women have been murdered in the country. The feminist platform Alas Tensas reported 34 femicides in 2022, two fewer than in 2021, but an alarming figure considering the Cuban population.

Havana continues to be the province with the most confirmed cases (8), while Camagüey and Matanzas reported 5. Little family support, widespread machismo and the fear of denouncing the attacker continue to be some of the main aggravating factors in the situation, in addition to the lack of a Law against Gender Violence and the non-classification of the crime of femicide in the current Penal Code.
