Before the North American Leaders Summit, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will send a letter to his counterpart Joe Biden in which he proposes to finalize a greater integration of North America, a development plan for Latin America and the Caribbean and that change the Monroe Doctrine so that there is no interventionism
in the region.
In his morning press conference, President López Obrador commented yesterday that he plans to send the letter on January 2, 2023 so that Biden knows in advance the proposals and plans that he will present to him at the bilateral meeting that they will hold in the context of the Summit of Leaders of North America, to be held in Mexico City from January 9 to 11 and in which the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, will also participate.
López Obrador ruled out the express question that the trial that is being followed in the United States against Genaro García Luna, former Secretary of Public Security in the six-year term of Felipe Calderón, is going to be a topic of conversation with Biden.
No, that is a legal matter. The trial of García Luna is already advancing in New York, in January, and this is a matter that has to do with justice in the United States, (those involved) are García Luna’s defense lawyers and those who are accusing him on behalf of the prosecution, there is already a jury and the trial is about to start, but that has nothing to do with us
said the president.
He assured that what will be addressed with the US president is a greater integration of North America in the economic and commercial spheres, the search for regional self-sufficiency in different areas and greater development for the continent.
He specified that he will propose to Biden a development plan for Latin America and the Caribbean, which would be similar to the Alliance for Progress promoted by John F. Kennedy. Nothing like it has been done in 50 years. How are we going to deal with the migratory phenomenon if we abandon development in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean?
said the Tabasco.
He added that he will also propose that there is no interventionism
to change the Monroe Doctrine and to all the countries of the Americas, including the United States and Canada, treat each other as allies and respect our sovereignty
.
López Obrador thus confirmed that before the meeting with Biden he will send him a letter in which he will detail these points, since if there is already a previous document, this can help us to deal more with these issues
