A new trial will be held against two Nicaraguan women acquitted of migrant smuggling

Judith Pena | January 19, 2023

The Acquittal Judgment, No. 704 of November 24, 2022, issued by the Oral Trial Court of the province of Chiriquí, where two women of Nicaraguan nationality were acquitted of the charges accused of smuggling of migrants, was revoked at the request of the First Prosecutor’s Office Against Organized Crime.

Through an annulment appeal, the prosecutor Esperanza Montenegro managed to order the new trial to be held, through an annulment ruling dated January 17, 2023.

The events occurred on February 5, 2020, when two Nicaraguan women promoted, collaborated, and facilitated the entry of another Nicaraguan woman from Costa Rica into Panamanian territory, evading immigration and police checkpoints for the purpose of illicit trafficking. .
