A residential building located on San Miguel street, between Campanario and Manrique streets, in Centro Habana, collapsed this Saturday afternoon. The official press confirmed that two people were injured, a mother and her child under one year of age.
On Facebook circulated a video when the medical services and the Police arrived at the scene of the accident and attended to those affected, in the midst of a crowd of people who were observing the scene.
In a brief statement released in the official media, the authorities indicated that there were only two victims, but users on social networks speculate that there is a third person whose condition is unknown because “the entire landslide fell” on top of him.
Both Old Havana and Centro Habana are constantly the scenes of collapses due to the lack of maintenance of the old buildings. The situation is complicated by the accumulation of humidity and the incidence of saltpeter.
The authorities indicated that preliminary there were only two victims, but users on social networks speculate that there is a third person.
The discontent over the precarious conditions of the infrastructures led to the fact that in August 2022 a group of families on Habana street, between Aguiar and Muralla, in the oldest area of the capital, take to the streets with their belongings in protest after the roof of the building collapsed and days went by without it being fixed.
However, some buildings do not resist and end up completely collapsing, as happened in November in Refugio, between Prado and Morro, where a large operation of fire trucks and even rescue dogs was required to pull three people out of the rubble.
A month earlier, in Old Havana, a girl died and three other people were injuredTwo women and a child. The four of them were trapped under the roof that fell on them, early in the morning of Monday, October 17, in the lot where they lived, on Sol street, between Egido and Villegas.
