Authorities present road and environmental expansion work. From the botanical garden they will wear sidewalks for a new lane.
Santo Domingo.-The extension project of the Republic of Colombia Avenue has become a light at the end of the tunnel for residents and drivers, which would transform vehicular chaos into an improvement of urban mobility with a road and environmental impact solution.
And it is that the capital faces every day a population growth that is challenging, so the project “Road and environmental solution of the Republic of Colombia Avenue and its surroundings” would placate the plugs that reign in that area.
This work is estimated will last 24 months, that is, two years, directly impacting the quality of life of more than 1.4 million inhabitants of three municipalities in Santo Domingo.
14 lost days
Each citizen who moves through Colombia, through more than 35 thousand vehicles per day, takes 75 minutes of their day in the plugs, which translates into 14 days lost a year due to the traffic of the area.
In an activity carried out in the National Botanical Garden, due to the claim of the people in the face of the possibility that this natural lung, the Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Palo, said that this space will not be touched and highlighted the demand for transparency of the population to take care of the area.
The Minister of Public Works and Communications, Eduardo Estrella, explained that with the project, instead of eliminating natural spaces, they will recover 24 thousand square meters of green areas with the intervention and sanitation of the Cañada de Arroyo Hondo, which currently concentrates high levels of pollution and a new environmental park will be built, under the administration of the botanist.
Road solution
Elías Santana, Vice Minister of Road Infrastructure, offered details of the project that seeks to decongest traffic, reduce pollution levels and recover public spaces.
He explained that the road solution begins from the Duarte Highway, passing through Monumental Avenue, travels through the Republic of Colombia to cross the front of the Botanical Garden and connect along Los Próceres avenue with a overpass.
A distributor will be created that will connect the Republic of Colombia and Jacobo Majluta avenues, this intervention being one of the most important and innovative axes for being a section in permanent chaos that links Santo Domingo Norte and the National District.
There, a new road will also be built, which will become the Jacobo Majluta extension, which is composed of a bridge over the Hondo stream and a trench system along the Cuba neighborhood, which is being evicted, and below Carlos Pérez Ricart avenue, flowing into Colombia before the botanist.
Botanist sidewalk
The engineer Juan José Núñez, representative of the GSDRD Vial consortium, said that in the area of Colombia, around the botanist, part of the sidewalks would be taken to add a lane, but that would not be touched beyond the perimeter fence.
Núñez indicated that in total there would be 25 informal and other semaforized crosses that will be eliminated with the extension, which currently hinder traffic and, instead, six operational returns will be created.
The investment for this intervention exceeds the RD $ 10 billion, from the funds generated by the renegotiation of the contract with the Aerodom company.
The Minister of the Environment, Paíno Henríquez, announced a special domestic infrastructure disposal plan of the National Botanical Garden, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary next year, highlighting that it is an essential space for environmental education.
