“A knob of oil or 26 eggs” what a Cuban can buy with his retirement

Mexico City, Mexico.- “My retirement has arrived, with which I can only buy 26 eggs or a knob of oil for my wife and this server,” a user identified as Franco de Jagüey wrote on his Facebook wall.

The old man reported that in mid-2022, after requesting his retirement, he began to sell avocados on the street that he harvests from a bush in his patio. What he collects from selling the fruit, when it is in season, helps him survive.

“Thanks to the ‘benefits’ of the ‘Aseres’ regime”, after working for 50 years in the culture sector: 14 as a plastic arts instructor, five as a gallery director and 31 as an independent artist, still with the Paid Social Security I got what I got: 26 eggs or a knob of oil, 1300 + 28 pesos.

The plastic artist confessed that as he got older he went from being a “poor man” to a “vulnerable person.” Franco does not show any confidence that the situation for the elderly in Cuba will improve, so he closes his writing by adding that he will have to learn to live like this, in absolute poverty.

In the comments of his publication, another user identified as Carlos René Cabadilla identified with the situation of Franco and the precarious retirement.

“I’m similar to you, but I’m not selling avocados yet, I don’t have one either, I can only give you some advice,” wrote the Cuban and then satirized the fictitious country shown by the official media.

“Stay connected to NTV and if you don’t get what they show at noon, don’t leave the line and wait for the stellar show at 8:00 p.m. There is everything, at a good price and quality.”

Last year the Center for Psychological and Sociological Research of Cuba (CIPS) indicated that the main deficiencies of the elderly on the island were food, medicines, glasses and poor condition of the houses.
