The National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the United States predicted that as it moves through the Caribbean, Tropical Storm Ian will strengthen and become a hurricane when it passes “near or over western Cuba.” According to a statementthere is a “risk of significant winds and storm surge”.

A hurricane watch was issued for Grand Cayman and a hurricane watch for the provinces for the provinces of Artemisa and Pinar del Río, also for the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud, this alert is issued “48 hours before the first event of tropical storm force winds, conditions that make outdoor preparations difficult or dangerous,” the bulletin detailed.

Before the notice for Pinar del Río, the president of the Provincial Defense Council (CDP), Yamilé Ramos, listed as priority actions the protection of human lives and the assets of the economy.

The provincial director of Public Health, Dr. Yusleivy Martínez, reported the suspension of medical consultations on Monday and Tuesday, in addition to indicating that beds are being released in care units. The health worker stated a Latin Press that there are medical-surgical brigades equipped with what is necessary to travel to places of possible solitary confinement.

The doctor urged the population to boil water and use sodium hypochlorite, to avoid the appearance of acute diarrheal infections and continue sanitizing measures against Aedes aegypti.

For its part, in agriculture, Agriculture resumes the protection of the harvested tobacco and stops the irrigation of seedbeds that will guarantee the seedlings demanded by the sowings of the winter stage, drains fields and moves the cattle to high places while accelerating the harvests in the productive areas.

On the other hand, a tropical storm watch is maintained for the Cuban provinces of Havana, Mayabeque and Matanzas and Little Cayman, Cayman Brac.

At 8:00 am, Ian was moving west-northwest at about 12 miles per hour. A turn to the northwest at a similar forward speed is expected later today, followed by a turn to the north-northwest on Monday and north on Tuesday.

On the track forecast by the National Hurricane Center, the center of Ian is forecast to pass southwest of Jamaica today, and near or west of the Cayman Islands on Monday, moving near or over the west of Cuba between Monday night and Tuesday morning and over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico next Tuesday.

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden approved an emergency declaration for the state of Florida and ordered federal assistance to supplement state and local response efforts due to Tropical Storm Ian’s expected passage through the area.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced in a statement released this Sunday that the declaration makes federal emergency assistance available to the state of Florida.

The measures taken by FEMA will provide adequate assistance for emergency measures to save lives, protect property and public health, the statement said. In addition, it has the authorization to identify, mobilize and provide at its discretion the necessary equipment and resources to reduce the impacts of the emergency.

Emergency protective measures, including direct federal assistance, will be provided with a 75 percent match of federal funds. Thomas J. McCool has been named the coordinator in charge of federal response operations in the affected areas of Florida.

The president’s initiative comes after the governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, extended the state of emergency to the entire territory on Saturday due to the forecast that Ian will hit, converted into a major hurricane, the coast of this southeastern state of Florida. USA
