Reyes Banegas died on the 18th, just 18 hours after arriving at the detention center. The agency said that the Hondurans admitted an alcohol abuse history

A 42 -year -old Honduran died in New York while being arrested for the United States Immigration and Customs Control Service, which adds 17 deaths of migrants in custody of this agency in this fiscal year, the maximum of the last five years.

ICE reported the death of Santos Reyes Banegas at the Nassau County Correctional Center in East Meadow, east of New York City, for an alleged failure of the liver “complicated by alcoholism”, according to the preliminary cause reported by the body in a statement.

Reyes Banegas died on the 18th, just 18 hours after arriving at the Detention Center, where “by protocol he went through a medical review” that declared him admissible on September 17, the government agency explained.

But the authorities, which clarify that the official cause of death is still under investigation, then found it unconscious in their detention unit.

The agency said that the Honduran, “who entered the United States illegally four months ago, admitted an alcohol abuse history.”

The last time the Central American entered the United States, after deportations in 2004, 2005 and 2019, the authorities arrested him on September 17 in Long Island, where they began a deportation process.

This death would be added to the 16 deaths of migrants already officially recognized by the ICE so far this fiscal year 2025, which began in October 2024, which already exceeds 12 registered throughout the fiscal year 2024.

This is the largest figure since 2021 and the second highest since the records began, because in the fiscal year of 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, there were 21 deaths of immigrants in ICE custody.
