A girl drowned this Saturday in the municipality of Cotorro, in Havana. The event came to light through social networks and has been confirmed by official accounts, although the identity of the minor has not transpired.
The events occurred during the heavy rains on Saturday, which caused the flooding of a street in the area of the Efraín Mayor polyclinic, when the girl tried to cross the street with her cousin. Both were swept away by the current.
According to some comments on social networks, a man tried to help the minors, who went into a sewer, but only managed to save one. The other one came loose from his hands and he was injured in the forehead.
“They say that they were crossing the street, but in that area after the line, when it rains, there is a lot of water. The man who tried to help told them not to go that way and they paid no attention”
“They say they were crossing the street but in that area after the line when it rains there is a lot of water current. The man who tried to help told them not to go that way and they didn’t pay attention. He managed to grab one and the other it got out of hand, trying to help them he fell and broke his forehead, that’s why it got out of hand,” said a neighbor in the area on Facebook.
“Good evening, I was there with the firefighters the whole time. There were two girls, one is alive when they took her to the hospital with her mother in a SIUM technique and the other was missing for more than two hours under water. The We met around 7:30, unfortunately deceased),” said Reinier Batista, a Facebook user who witnessed the events.
The lack of official information has circulated different versions about how exactly the events occurred, as well as the ages of the girls, although they all agree that both were less than ten years old.
Some users have warned of the poor condition of the streets in that area every time there is torrential rain and how the poor drainage of the sewers leads to a large part of the municipality being flooded when phenomena of this type occur.
Another danger is the one that supposes that the sewers are open, because it can suck passers-by. Sometimes the authorities lift the covers and grills to clean the ducts and leave them uncovered; others, they directly steal them. In any case, when they disappear, they are not replenished.
