The Remote Control Unit of the Tele Turquino telecenter suffered a raging fire this Wednesday morning between kilometers 40 and 50 of the National Highway, before reaching the El Cristo checkpoint, in the province of Santiago de Cuba.
The bus that transported the teams of the Santiago state television station was heading to the city of Bayamo, in Granma, to broadcast the confrontation between the Industriales and Alazanes baseball teams, in the subseries corresponding to the play off of the 61 National Baseball Series.
The fire “is presumed” to have started “as a result of an electrical problem” that caused the “engine fire and spread to the cabin, damaging the technical equipment,” Tele Turquino published on its Facebook page.
The telecentre detailed that two people were traveling in the vehicle, the driver, Gustavo Fong Gallardo, who suffered “slight burns while trying to put out the flames” for which he had to be transferred to the Juan Bruno Zayas General Hospital, and the mechanic Roberto Fernández Gola, assistant General.

For his part, the official journalist Anolvis Cuscó Tarradell said on his social networks that the vehicle was being guarded, “as usual”, by the motorized traffic police and the firefighters of Command 4 went to the scene to put out the fire.
The fire generated reactions from users on Facebook. “This remote control unit is essential for television broadcasts in the South East,” said Carlos Sanabia Marrero, a worker at the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television. “Now, investigate thoroughly, repair the damage and move forward with all the strength, will and willingness of my valuable colleagues from Tele Turquino.”
Granma’s CNC TV telecenter reported that after the incident, Cuban Television sought another alternative to broadcast the subseries and a remote will be sent from Havana to Bayama, although it will be operated by “Santiago specialists.”
