A fire in an apartment in Nuevo Vedado leaves two injured, one of them very serious

Juan Francisco Sánchez Freire, 77, was seriously injured this Sunday morning in a fire that occurred in apartment 9J of the Factor 821 building, between Conill and Santa Ana de Nuevo Vedado, Havana. The flames were allegedly caused by the man himself, who would have attempted suicide by throwing fuel on himself and setting himself on fire.

Around 8:00 am the residents of the building, with 14 floors and 144 apartments, began to smell burning and noticed smoke coming out of the window of one of the rooms. Several residents of the nearest floors moved towards the place and tried to put out the flames by throwing buckets of water at them.

In the house, they were at that moment, the ex-wife of Sánchez Freire, Luisa, their daughter, Vivian, and the adolescent grandson. The man, who no longer lived in the apartment, was visiting his family when, according to testimonies from neighbors, he tried to commit suicide in one of the rooms, later – already engulfed in flames – he went to his ex-wife’s room and was He pounced on her, causing burns to the woman as well.

Minutes later, the firefighters managed to put out the flames and took Sánchez Freire out of the apartment with severe burns all over his body. The man was transferred to the Calixto García hospital and also his ex-wife who has burns on her hands and legs.

Sánchez Freire was one of the builders of the building, a Yugoslav model, which was inaugurated in 1985 under the micro-brigade system. After his divorce, he moved to live in another house but he frequented his old apartment located in the same building where the headquarters of 14ymedio.
