A group of 20 Cubans who left the island through the port of Cojímar (Havana) arrived in the United States, according to a post shared this Monday on Facebook by Professor V. Sorjes Martín. “Dream fulfilled,” said this man from Havana with studies in engineering and legal sciences.
“We all left immigration today for the families’ house,” Sorjes Martín, who had “kept a low profile” before some friends due to the imminent escape that was brewing on the speedboat, made it known. Angelawith license plate HA 50698.
Sorjes Martín, who among many other sacrifices had to sell his house to make the trip, recounted in a video that the journey had lasted 10 and a half hours, and during it there were times when “stress” took over the crew. “We had to turn around three or four boats and finally a coastguard who fell behind us, but he couldn’t catch us.”
The current situation in Cuba “with a tremendous number of political problems,” commented Sorjes Martín, motivated this group to “run away.” The teacher, who shared several images in which four children and a dog are observed, insisted: “Here everyone is family.”
Regarding the speedboat, the man from Havana informed that the US authorities will define his destination.
So far in October, 205 Cubans have made landfall in Florida, most of them on rustic rafts, although two of them arrived on October 12 on windsurf boards. The latter “will be subjected to a deportation procedure”, warned the head of the Border Patrol of the Miami sector, Walter Slosar.
Just as the arrival of Cuban rafters does not stop, nor do the deportations, the US Coast Guard repatriated 80 Cubans between Saturday and Sunday. The migrants were returned to the Island aboard the ships william flowers Y Paul Clark.
The repatriated rafters are part of six interceptions made in the vicinity of Key West, the Tavernier Creek sport fishing port, Marathon and Sugar Loaf Key.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Nicole Groll urged Cubans to choose a safe and legal path to reach the United States “so families don’t wonder where their loved ones are when they choose to migrate illegally.”
