The Havana authorities assure that they are launching a “sanitization campaign” to solve the “difficult situation” of garbage collection in the capital. on a note published this Monday, Havana Tribune recounts his visit to Marianao and interviews the director of the municipality’s Municipal Community Services Company, Amandis Beltrán Blanco.
Although the official attributed the “difficult conditions” to carry out the cleanup to “the lack of resources of all kinds”, he also blamed “the existence of a high degree of social indiscipline”.
However, Beltrán Blanco made it clear that “they do not have enough capacity for daily collection”, since “they only have four collector trucks and one open truck”.
The disastrous situation can be seen in all corners of the capital. San Rafael and San Francisco, San Francisco and San Martín, San Martín and Infanta, Infanta and San Miguel. The corners of Centro Habana link the same panorama: precarious containers overflowing with uncollected garbage. In Valle and Hospital, there are five of these deposits, almost defeated by the weight.
“The dump in front of the San Lázaro pharmacy is of biblical proportions,” laments a neighbor of the place, who does not conceive how that corner has such hygienic conditions.
In the same neighborhood, at the corner of Hospital and San Lázaro, a short distance from a store and in front of a doctor’s office, there used to be an overflowing garbage can. Now, there is a sign on the wall, with the signature of the PNR (National Revolutionary Police): “Do not throw garbage. You will be fined 10,000 pesos.”
“The only thing they did was move the dump,” denounces a local resident. “Now the dump is in Espada and San Lázaro.”
This Monday, coincidentally, 14ymedio he ran into a garbage truck, at the corner of the San Rafael market. The collection vehicle, which left behind a trail of malodorous liquids through the streets of Havana, could not cope with the amount of bags of waste accumulated far beyond the container. “This is how they collect garbage and spread infection everywhere,” one of the residents of the area told this newspaper.
