Madrid, Spain.- A serious traffic accident occurred on Tuesday at kilometer 110 of the National Highway, in the Matanzas area, left a balance of a deceased and two injured, according to witnesses on social networks.
The incident occurred near the herds of Jicarita, at the entrance of Bolondrón, when a private vehicle, known as “The Gomez truck”, hit a state refrigerated truck that was parked from behind.
According to the Alexander Ríos Cruz Facebook publicationone of the first to report the fact, in the truck three people from Quemado de Güines, Villa Clara. One of them, who was in the cabin, was transferred with serious injuries to the hospital, where he suffered the amputation of one leg. Shortly after, he died after cardiac arrest. The other two occupants remain hospitalized with injuries, although their health states have not been specified.
In comments in the publication of Ríos Cruz, close to the deceased identified him as Yosniel and sent his condolences to the family. The injured are the driver, Félix Juvier, and a boy who was in the back of the truck, Lalier ballast.
This new accident adds to the list of road accidents that in recent years have caused numerous victims in the country, reflecting the persistent road safety crisis in Cuba.
In May of this yearalso on the national highway, but in kilometer 277, another accident cost five people. The incident involved two cars, a Peugeot 404 who was traveling from Santa Clara to Sancti Spíritus and a Geely CK on the way to the city of Havana.
The number of deaths due to traffic accidents in Cuba increased 18 % during the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year. Between January and March of this year, 173 deaths were reported, 27 more than in the same period of 2024, when 146 deaths were recorded.
The main causes of these accidents in the country remain the lack of maintenance in road infrastructure, the obsolete state of the automotive park – with vehicles that exceed four decades of use – and human failures, such as the non -observance of traffic standards or negligent driving.
