A Cuban child survivor of a shipwreck in which his mother drowned dies in Darien

This Sunday the death by a heart attack of the Cuban boy Brayan was confirmed in his attempt to cross the Darien Gap with his father and sister. “There is a flood of the river and we have not been able to bring the body to Acandí,” he told 14ymedio the mayor of the Colombian municipality of Acandí, in the department of Chocó, Alexander Murillo.

The official mentioned that the body of the 14-year-old boy was beginning to decompose. If his transfer was not achieved by the afternoon of this Monday, he said, “he should bury himself there.” According to forensic reports from Panama, until October There was a record of 50 bodies of migrants recovered in Darien.

Murillo confirmed that Brayan, whose first surname is unknown, was the son of Lisandra Bravo Alarcón, the migrant who died last October in the shipwreck she was carrying. 30 irregular migrants. “We have not had contact with the family, the father and a sister, the only thing we know about them was that they requested support and the mayor’s office will run the 5,000 pesos for the burial, it could be that they have already followed the path.”

Last Thursday Brayan along with his father and sister joined a group of ten migrants and headed to the so-called Loma de la Muerte. “Migrants arriving in Colombia continue through the Darien Gap, which creates an immense risk”, declared the member of the Colombian institute Defensoría del Pueblo, Carlos Camargo to the Colombian newspaper Time.

In a letter sent last October To the foreign ministries of Colombia and Panama, Camargo warned of the need to “build an express humanitarian route” between both countries and cited the threats of coyotes to the survivors of the shipwreck in which Brayan and his family were, “they fear for their safety” precise. “Otherwise, they would be exposed to the criminal organizations of migrant smugglers who do not seek anything other than to take economic advantage of this human drama.”

The Governments of Colombia and Panama imposed in August a quota of 500 daily migrants who can pass through the Darien jungle, in view of the large number of Haitians who have arrived in recent months.

These limitations have caused an accumulation of up to 20,000 migrants in Necoclí, from where the 500 migrants cross the Gulf of Urabá in safe and legal boats to cross the jungle, where they face inclement weather and the armed groups that operate there.

“This situation puts the lives of migrants at risk, regardless of their origin, because there are no minimum security conditions, so we have requested that we reevaluate the possibility of making quotas more flexible,” Camargo told Teleantioquia News.
