A country is not a baseball stadium

Clásico Mundial de Béisbol, Cuba

Havana Cuba. – There are people who do not have the “gift of people”. There are people who never manage to be funny, even when they try to do it every day when they get up. There are people who brush their teeth looking in the mirror and devising the new piece of paper. It is customary to call those, at least in Cuba, “paperaceros” and, obviously, that army is made up of people who like to make big papers every day.

Undoubtedly, the greatest of all the steel-papers in Cuba today is Miguel Diaz-Canel, the one some call president, while others call him secretary of the PCC…, and there are also those who accuse him of being both things at the same time. There are also those who call him, simply, “the handyman” or the husband of “La Machi”, because the poor man almost has less prominence than his wife.

And everything will turn out worse, and from now on, for Diazca. It will all be much worse after those 14 races that the Americans made in the face of the two sad little races that the team of Díaz-Canel and Raúl Castro achieved. It was a sad and very rainy night in the capital of the Island. A sad night in which they could not even activate the multiple and large screens with which they assured that they would fill the city to see the long-awaited victory “big”.

And the rain became heavy, and the giant screens did not reach the parks, those parks that had to be carefully selected by the Communist Party and the Ministry of the Interior. And the viewing became corrupted, and spoiled with the so much insistence of the rain. And I imagine, as I write, how those big bosses who dreamed of watching victory on their huge television screens will be now and only watched the many hits from the enemy.

And those hits, at least for the communist bosses, have a smell, but they will say stink, to the White House and the Pentagon, to Central Intelligence Agency. And the Cubans “orphans of televisions” had no choice but to settle for the radio waves, and those who don’t even have radios got any idea after interpreting the screams of those who listened or watched the game on radios and televisions.

The communists tried to monitor emotions, but above all to concentrate and hijack emotions in the public spaces that they would fill with policemen. The communists and their enormous power thought of everything; the thousands of races, the failure against the triumph, and above all the effervescence that could appear in a country that is increasingly pro-Yankee and more adverse to communist power.

The “juntamenta” is not viewed favorably these days. Any joint can end in a 11J, although that “juntamenta” had to do, only, with watching a ball game, but it was not just any game, it was a ball game between Cuba and the United States. And a baseball match between Cuba and the United States highlights, as was the case with the results of this match, the impossibility of overcoming the differences between Cuba and the United States, between their governments, of course.

For the Cuban government, a baseball game against the United States is the closest thing to a war, and every time the missile war. A confrontation with the United States, even in a baseball game, ends up having the overtones of a life and death war. A confrontation with the United States is, for the Cuban government, the ultimate goal, the possibility of demonstrating its “strength” and its “daring.”

And that opposition on the baseball field is a war, once again the much-vaunted Girón. For the communists that ball game, that World Baseball Classic It must have been another Girón with Fidel Castro throwing himself from the top of the tank. That Classic must have been, for them, a war between fear and courage, a war in which the communists would represent the “brave”, the most “daring”, and again Fidel Castro as team captain, and another time sport resembling war. Oh, and again the defeat, as defeat as the false triumphs. Is what Camilo said still heard in Cuba? Is it still said “against Fidel not even on the ball”?
