“A contribution to Ukraine will be receiving refugees”

“A contribution to Ukraine will be receiving refugees”

In recent days, Russia shelled the Ukrainian settlement of Borodyanka, reducing several buildings to rubble. The place is located within the capital Kyiv, only 45 kilometers from the urban area.

The United States Intelligence service reported that Russia transferred 90% of its combat power to Ukraine. In addition to the capital, the bombing occurs in the cities of Cherniv (a city that borders Romania), Kharkiv (the second most populous city with two million inhabitants) and Mariupol (a key port city in the Ukrainian economy).

At the same time that these assaults are taking place, yesterday, Thursday, a new round of negotiations was held between representatives of both countries in Belarus (Belarus) seeking an agreement (the second meeting in eight days of conflict). At the end of the meeting, an agreement was reached on a temporary ceasefire for humanitarian reasons.

Carolina Sancho, an academic at the Institute of International Studies of the University of Chile, explains that, from a Latin American perspective, support for Ukraine is observed, although the position is shared, due to the fact that three countries in the area support Russia. These are Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

For the analyst, a contribution beyond the speeches, by the authorities of the region, may be to receive refugees from Ukraine. Considering that Volodímir Zelensky, president of Ukraine, insisted on the request for international help in relation to military support. However, the aid they receive is only humanitarian and economic punishment for Russia.

“Considering Ukrainians with relatives in this geographical area would help the people received to have an easier time inserting themselves in the receiving country. For the measure to be successful, it is necessary for each country to evaluate its possibilities of receiving refugees from this armed conflict. Another measure may be to send humanitarian aid to the refugees and the inhabitants of Ukraine”, he detailed.

ECONOMIC SANCTIONS

The freezing of part of the foreign exchange reserves of the Russian Central Bank abroad, among other measures, are part of the financial punishment imposed by the European Union on Russia. In this regard, the analyst affirms that only time will give the perspective to evaluate if it has been enough.

“The challenge is given by the adoption of measures that have an impact in the short term, favoring the end of armed hostilities and the withdrawal of the Russian military from Ukrainian territory. However, the economic sanctions adopted may have their greatest impact in the medium term. In this context, the increase in military aid sent can help to address the gap, without guaranteeing that it can modify the objectives that Putin has set for himself”, he concluded.
